Make a Will Online

You’ve decided that it’s time that you made your will online.

Good decision.

Making your own will online is much easier now than it ever was in the past.  For a fraction of the cost of using an attorney, you can have a will created that is legally binding in your state.

Even better, you don’t have to leave your computer to get it done.

Things to Think About Before You Make An Online Will

First, having your will made online is only for simple wills.  By “simple will”, I mean wills where your assets are less than $2 million.  Once your assets start to exceed a few million dollars, you really ought to have a qualified estate planning attorney and possibly accountant work with you on your plan.

Second, have the names of all your beneficiaries and heirs, personal representative, and burial arrangements decided on before you start the online will process.  You’re going to be asked by these questions by the will creating software.

Third, if you already have a written will, understand that it is entirely superseded by the new will.  So if there are provisions in your old will that you want to keep,  you need to re-write those in your new will.

This is an important point, so don’t ignore it:

If all you want to do is add a couple new provisions to an existing will, do not make a new will!

Instead, you should amend the old will, or copy all the provisions from the old will to the new will and then make whatever additions in the new will you choose.

Choosing An Online Company To Draft Your Will

Pick the biggest and best company to make your will.  By drafting your will yourself, you are saving a ton of money (hundreds or even thousands of dollars) compared with using a lawyer.

Don’t try to save another $50 by using a cut-rate service.

Legalzoom and Quicken/Intuit Willmaker are some of the biggest in the industry.
